As life evolves so there are many factors that creep into our daily existence that affect our health. We are all living in a word that is very noisy. This is clearly evident in large cities where the noise level hardly ever subsides. The baby boomer generation has grown up in a world that has changed very rapidly and this includes the level of noise that the human ear has to contend with. There have been many inventions that cause a great deal of noise. Apart from large machinery we are all constantly listening to radios, televisions, telephones and ipods. All this has a detrimental affect on our hearing.

Baby Boomers Hearing Loss Is Evident

Are you familiar with the phrase ‘The Baby Boomer Generation’- BBG? These are Americans born from 1945 to 1964. Studies prove this generation is likely to be affected by hearing problems more than those born beforehand. At fifty one years of age, the former President of the US, Bill Clinton, one of BBG had to use a hearing aid. As many ‘baby boomers’ reach their forties and fifties they notice changes in their hearing. This takes the form of needing raised volume on televisions, asking others to repeat words and difficulty in hearing over the phone. Numbers suggest about thirty eight million members of the baby boom generation have damaged hearing. It is commonly accepted that as we get older hearing can become weaker. But this figure is far too high. The question is why is it is so?

It cannot be overlooked that the modern world we live in is indeed a lot more noisy than before. This has been affected by the advent of heavy machinery, planes, cars and many more new inventions. Because of these inventions the workplace changes rapidly in a short time. For example, factory employees get used to the constant noise levels and their health suffers. Another consideration is lifestyle. Younger generations have enjoyed loud music and motorbikes. Our great grandparents did not listen to bands like White Snake at ear splitting levels or the revving up of a Harley Davidson. The baby boom generation was the first to have to deal with new and extreme levels of guitars and deafening drum sets. They loved it but look at the result.

Is this an exaggeration or is the problem widespread? Unfortunately, it is a lot more serious than many think. A very small loss of hearing causes big problems. It makes us slow to react. Before pain is felt at high volume levels – the damage is done. Many of the baby boomers do not get medical help. Even less consult an audiologist for proper testing. You may have haring loss and not be aware of it until it is too late. It is a condition that takes place slowly over a period of time. It is so subtle it is not noticed but the damage is permanent.

The only way to deal with any problem is to deal with it. But it has been noted with the help of surveys that the baby boomer generation simply ignore the signs. If there is damage it probably cannot be undone. But it is sensible to make sure that the problem does worsen. It is necessary to prevent any more damage. You will be told to stay out of noisy environments. A par of suitable ear plugs will help if you have to be such a setting. Even armed with some knowledge on how to take care of your hearing you must go to an audiologist and have the proper testing carried out.

There are many kids who are living with the reality of hearing problems. Not all kinds of hearing aids are suited to their needs. But bone conduction hearing aids are usually effective in the case of children. Others who also benefit in particular from this kind of hearing aid are those who have temporary hearing loss. This could be caused by physical damage, blockage, infection or eczema. Bone conduction hearing aids work with an oscillator. It picks up sounds from the outside of the ear and vibrates onto the skull. This is a signal that is picked up by the inner ear.

Bone Conduction Hearing Aids Use Oscillator

There is major difference between Bone Conduction Hearing Aids and other models available today on the market. Both take the sound from outside the ear. However, a traditional model amplifies the sound inside the middle ear, in the ear mould. The inner ear then receives the sounds from the ear mould. The Bone Conductor Hearing aid is different. It sends the signal picked up outside the ear, straight to an oscillator. The oscillator vibrates against the skull which the inner ear recognizes as sound. Although the Bone Conduction Hearing Aid is not as efficient as the other hearing aids available, it is good for those whose condition is unsuitable for the regular kind of aid.

For example, Atresia, which affects children, is a condition where the hearing canal is blocked. Regular models are ineffective because the sound can not be passed from outside the ear, to the inner ear. The Bone Conduction Hearing aids are, in any case, generally good for children. It is also good for those who temporarily suffer hearing loss, because of a blockage, infection or some type of physical damage. They may also be more suitable than the regular kind of aid, for those who constantly suffer ear infections or eczema. The Bone Conduction Hearing Aid is also preferable when the ear canal is too small, either entirely or in parts, or, you have permanent physical damage that can not be corrected surgically. A big plus is the Bone Conduction Hearing Aid needs little power to operate.

There are some drawbacks to the Bone Conduction Hearing aid. Like regular aids, the sounds it reproduces are similar to listening to someone on the telephone. They never sound quite the same. Also, with this unit, the sound is mono, making it difficult for the wearer to determine where the sounds are coming from. Although the unit does have a wider frequency range and creates less distortion, therefore sound quality is improved. Another drawback is, the bone Conduction Hearing aid can be uncomfortable, because the headband that holds it in place must be tight. If it is not, the vibrations are weak and the unit fails to work properly. The first models were implanted into glasses but the newest models are implanted surgically. A Swedish company manufactures the BAHA model – Bone Anchored Hearing Aids. It is placed under the skin and vibrates directly onto the skull, therefore eliminating this problem.

The Bone Conduction Hearing Aids are used by less than 1% of those who need an aid, making them hard to find. Before choosing the BAHA you should properly take not of all other choices on the market. If you discuss this with an audiologist or other medical professional your questions should be answered.

The best kind of cheap hearing aids would be those that are cheap due to a discount or a special offer. A hearing aid is such an important device that it should never be cheap because it is of an inferior quality. Even those that are cheaper should be so because they are more conventional and use less technology. It makes sense that a device that uses the most modern technology is going to be more expensive. If a hearing aid is too cheap then you should question why. A reliable supplier may grant you a discount or a wholesale price but inferior quality is never an option when it comes to cheap hearing aids.

Cheap Hearing Aids Are Available

If you are suffering from loss of hearing, you need to buy a hearing aid. It’s unavoidable. Of course the question is what is it going to cost? High prices are always the bone of contention between the people who need the hearing aids and those who manufacture them. Why does such a tiny item cost so much? Hearing aids can be so very small but the technology they incorporate can be hugely expensive. This is especially so of an item that is specific and customizing is necessary to meet your needs. Some can be extremely expensive depending on their individual features and style. Even how competitive the market is regarding the model suitable for your particular requirements can affect the price. So what can you really expect to pay? The answer is very broad and can be from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

What should you be aware of? Everyone loves a bargain. Who does not want to save money? But generally, if it seems too good to be true, it is. Pay for a medical examination by a licensed audiologist and avoid websites that require a waiver for this medical check. Although the deal they are offering may seem good, they probably will not supply you with the hearing aid you need. There are companies promising you a hearing aid for as little as $300. This can be seen in local and national newspapers. It sounds inviting. But very disappointing when you find out that you are not suitable for this model and that your particular condition requires a much more expensive device. Do not be confused because you have no background information. There are still those selling door to door. It is important not to buy until you have consulted an audiologist.

How can you find a suitable supplier of cheap hearing aids? Hearing properly is important, your health is important. Do not just buy the cheapest and deny yourself a suitable hearing aid with much needed features. Also, do not avoid a needed upgrade to avoid costs. Shop around and compare prices. You might be surprised at how different they can be, for the same product, from different suppliers. Large companies have big buying power and can pass on the savings to their customers. Your audiologist may be able to point you in the direction of a reputable and cost saving wholesaler.

After you have been checked by your audiologist, listened to their advice and had a good shop around, you may be able to buy the model you need from an online wholesaler. You could save money this way. It is a good idea to try and find a supplier that offers a trial period. Hearing aids are not cheap and this is a good way to ensure that you get the perfect one for you.

It is hard enough for adults to have to cope with the loss of hearing. When children have to cope depending on their age it may also be hard for them to understand why they are not being understood. This of course leads to frustration because there is not effective communication taking place between these children and others. Fortunately this situation can be improved with the help of child hearing aids. With the expertise of an audiologist and the most appropriate hearing devices, children can be taught to communicate effectively through sound. A audiologist is the professional who will recommend the right child hearing aids.

Child Hearing Aids Improve Quality Of Life

Hearing difficulties can seriously hinder a child’s development, affecting speech and language at a time in their life when both should be developing rapidly. There are hearing aids available, especially for children, even for a child as young as four weeks old. If you feel your baby may have hearing problems, you should visit the doctor straight away. Keep an eye out for any signs, the sooner it is diagnosed, and treatment can begin, the better. It is of the utmost importance to diagnose any problems quickly, and find the right solution for your child. Without this, the harm done could affect that child, not only during those all important developing years, but also throughout its adult life.

Slow development of language skills could indicate a hearing problem. If your child is not talking when others of the same age are, it might be a good idea to check their hearing is normal. Take them to the doctor for a check up, just to make sure. There might be a problem you haven’t realized beforehand. A child can not develop speech correctly if they can not hear properly. Certain types of hearing loss can be hereditary. An example is sensorineural hearing loss caused by problems within the middle ear. If there is a family history of hearing loss, there is a greater possibility your child will also suffer problems. If your child has been unfortunate enough to suffer a head trauma, there is also a high risk of a hearing problem developing. A bacterial disease, such as meningitis can also cause problems.

Deciding which hearing aid, best suited for your child, can be quite daunting. It is vital that parents consult an Audiologist and listen to their advice. Any adjustments that may need to be made to later on, especially where a very young child is concerned, will have to be made by you. Also, as the child grows up, their hearing may change, so parents do have keep an eye on things, constantly. A Behind the Ear Hearing Aid is the most common device used for children. It has an ear mould that fits inside the ear; this will definitely have to change as the child grows. It is however, one of the easiest aids for parents to monitor and is easily cleaned, sturdy and flexible.

Doctors tend to recommend Digital Hearing Aids because of their superior sound quality, in comparison to their analogue counterparts, their flexibility and the choice of add on features available. Parents often choose the Digital Hearing Aid for the same reasons. A useful add on feature for children is they can use assistive educational technology with the Digital Hearing Aid, whereby the unit can be connected to various devices. Telecoils are another useful add on as they can be attached to a variety of devices, including the telephone, enabling an audio input to be connected directly.

It always worrying when you discover your child has a hearing problem. Remember, if treated correctly they can lead fully and happy lives, as well as any other child or adult.

There can be no doubt that the online is a very good place to do shopping. This goes for just about any item that you may need. It is indeed possible to use the internet for discount hearing aids. Online you will find a great variety of hearing aids that are offered at discount prices. But because this is such a sensitive device that is so essential to your quality of life you must take great care in which supplier you make use of. For your own benefit speak to an audiologist and get a recommendation before placing your order.

Buying Discount Hearing Aids Online Gives Variety And Savings

You need a hearing aid but where is the best place to buy one? As you may be aware these items are not cheap. Prices differ and there are models costing several thousand dollars. This can be a tough pill to swallow when the object you are buying might be the size of a bottle cap. Hearing aids are small but technology is pricy. Consider buying your hearing aid online. There are many sites offering hearing and there are models at amazingly discounted prices. You will soon notice there are devices as low as $300. That is a good price. But why are these so much cheaper than others? Like most other consumables if it seems too good to be true then it probably is.

Of course you want to get the best value for your money. For those of us who do experience problems with hearing it is an important sense to have. It is quite possible to find a cost effective hearing aid online if you have some background knowledge and if you are guided by common sense. You must find a supplier who gives a 30 day trial. If you can negotiate a longer period then do so. Whether you buy online or not should not affect the importance of a trial period. The model may not be suitable for you and then you can return it and try out a different model. This means you will not have to waste money.

A hearing aid is an investment not only financially but also in your quality of life. Hearing properly means that you will not incur unnecessary mishaps. The right model for you is the one that can be adjusted to your unique requirements. But the supplier that you choose must also be willing to make these adjustments for you until you are confident about doing it yourself.

Make certain that your hearing aid comes with a warranty. Take the time to go through the small print. This is for your own protection should there be any future problems to contend with. If a website request you to sign a waiver it is best to refuse. In actual fact, it is unfair to expect a consumer to give up any rights. There are suppliers who want it all their own way. Never buy online until you have spoken to an audiologist. A professional is the only person who can give you accurate advice regarding what you need from a hearing aid.

Once you have seen an audiologist face to face and he or she has examined you it may be time to buy online. You will only make the right purchase when you have all the correct information from the right source. There are sites that offer hearing aids wholesale and these are recommended by professionals. Examples of these sites are:

Because our hearing aids make intimate contact with our bodies they do deserve the most meticulous attention. These devices that we depend on so much must be kept one hundred percent clean. For this reason hearing aid cleaners must be bought. Hearing devices should be carefully cleaned every day and at the very least once a week. However, to most people once a week is really stretching things a bit. If we do not keep our devices clean with the help of the most useful hearing aid cleaners our ears become infected. Hearing aids that are not cleaned and maintained will not last.

Hearing Aid Cleaners: Essential Hygiene And Maintenance

Like anything else you might wear your personal hearing aid must also be cleaned. It is an important part of the maintenance of your aid. If you take proper care of your hearing aid it will last as long as it should. They are fragile and are not cheap items. It is in your interest to keep them in good condition. It is of course, also a mater of personal hygiene. Earwax does collect on the earpiece. This can be the cause of irritation or even infection. All hearing aids are sensitive to water. It is imperative that you do not get these costly pieces of technology wet. Your hand must be dry when handling the aid. When cleaning, remember to handle with great care because a hearing aid is a delicate piece of equipment. How you go about cleaning depends on the model of hearing aid you have.

The ear mold and the tube of the BTE (behind the ear aid) should be cleaned every night in warm soapy water. Do not wash the piece that connects the tube to the hearing aid. If you do it will be damaged irrevocably. In any case, ensure they are completely dry before using them again. The unit must be cleaned each day with a tissue or dry, soft cloth. If daily is too much trouble you should not clean them less than once a week. A good time to clean them is at night when you may not need your aid as much.

An ITE (in the ear hearing aid) – should be wiped over with a tissue or soft cloth every time you take it out and also when you put back in. Audio wipes, used to clean speakers and electronic equipment can also be used. Most of these aids have a ‘wax loop’ which stops earwax collecting inside the sound bore. If your model does not then you can buy a similar accessory with the same function. This can be found at many hearing aid outlets. It can reduce the time needed for cleaning. Wax picks are handy and can be found at the same outlets. It is a good little tool to help remove wax fragments from your expensive hearing aid.

Although there are no special products for cleaning your hearing aid there are products to keep your ears clean. This is a help. There are germicidal sprays and ear creams that can soothe the irritation experienced when you first wear a hearing aid. It may be a good idea to keep it at hand for the preliminary period. Dri-Aid acts like a dehumidifier. Earwax contains moisture and keeping the ear canal dry helps cut down on build up. There is also a selection of tools you can use. Apart from the wax picks and wax loops already mentioned, an ear brush also keeps ears clean. All three are available as a special kit.

Ay item that costs a lot of money should be insured. A hearing aid does cost a lot of money. If we have to upgrade every so often the last thing we need is the extra expense of having to replace a device for a reason that should fall under insurance. Hearing aid insurance is granted by certain insurance companies but it is not a standard issue with most companies. If you or a family member uses a hearing aid make certain to voice your opinion regarding this matter to as many insurance companies as you can. In fact make a concerted effort to get the best deal possible that includes your hearing aid insurance.

Hearing Aid Insurance A Growing Possibility

Unlike most of the technology you have at home, most companies will not insure hearing aids. More and more of the older generation in the United States need hearing aids. Because of this insurance companies are being placed under increasing pressure to provide this coverage. However, there are some forward thinking companies that are already providing insurance. You do have to pay an increased premium for it. If you need a hearing aid it might be worth considering paying the extra money. A hearing aid is important to your health. It is also an expensive piece of equipment to replace. Some companies that do provide coverage are; PlanPlus, Midwest Hearing Industries and ESCO.

There are companies that argue it is too costly to provide coverage as there are so many people over the age of sixty who need a hearing aid. An ever increasing number of Americans are suffering from hearing loss and require a hearing aid. This must lead to a change in opinion by the insurance companies. In addition, this argument does not seem to have a strong basis when insurance is available for eyeglasses. This essential aid is also needed by a huge number of people. There is also the example of problems such as alcoholism that is covered.

There is also the consideration of children who need hearing aids. Without these devices they could suffer speech difficulties as well as learning disabilities. This can affect the normal development of a child as well as his or her general well being. People need to talk about the issue and write letters to the relevant insurance companies. Maybe with enough pressure change can be brought about.

Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma and Rhode Island have recently brought into force, laws that Health Plans must include Hearing Aids for children. Even so, who is eligible, and the amount of coverage, does vary depending on the age of the child and the type of hearing loss they have. It’s a start, but still not enough. The tide is slowly changing, due to pressure on the Insurance Companies, from more and more people. It is certainly an important issue for those who suffer hearing loss.

Some people have sent letters of complaint to their Insurance Company and been granted limited levels of coverage for their trouble. If you need a hearing aid, it just might be worth discussing that possibility with your provider. Curiously enough, although they refuse to insure a hearing aid, they will cover ear surgery. In most cases, those who suffer from the type of hearing loss that requires cochlear implants are nearly always covered. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover hearing aids. But if your doctor requests funding it is illegal to refuse. People have received payment in this way.

This link, http://www.listen-up.org/haidfund.htm , will take you to the ‘Listen Up’ website. It can provide you with lots of detailed information with regards to insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid. It also has information relative to the different laws for the different states throughout the USA.

When buying a hearing aid you must also be given all the right instructions regarding the upkeep and maintenance of the device. The first instruction would be that cleanliness is part of maintenance. This is an important means of keeping your device in good working order. Knowing whether or not your battery is dead or if your hearing aid is in need of repair is also important. Think about using a battery tester to determine this. There are many small tasks that you can do. But there are repairs that would need to be done by an expert. If you have done all that is required of you and your device is still not working then go straight to an expert.

The Basics Of Hearing Aid Repair

By taking care of your hearing aid you will cut back on maintenance and repair. You will also have the result of saving money and no unnecessary inconvenience to yourself. Maintenance and repair does come as part and parcel with the ownership of a hearing aid. The number one cause of problems and need for repair is that of earwax and moisture. This is accountable for around seventy five percent of repairs. This is avoidable if proper cleaning is carried out on the hearing aid. This is especially important with regards to the smaller models. Never let water enter the electronics and regularly clean with a soft cloth or tissue. The electronics do need replacing over time because there will be normal wear and tear. Receivers may have to be replaced or you may need new wiring.

Smaller models often need the most maintenance and especially the CIC (completely in the canal). They are not easy to break but they are the most susceptible to being contaminated by earwax. If you are not careful to clean regularly it can be expensive to replace and repair. How often can you expect to be visiting the repair shop? A CIC needs the most regular maintenance and will probably have to go in every seven to nine months. In the Canal aids – ITC – less frequently, every nine to twelve months. With an In The Ear – ITE – you can be prepared to some kind of replacement every twelve to fifteen months.

Usually, it is better to send aids to the audiologist as opposed to returning them to the supplier. Prices differ as an older model can be more expensive to repair than the more modern types. This is because the parts can be more difficult to find. Sending your hearing aid to the manufacturer can also cost more than if you take it to your audiologist. Circuit changes can cost approximately $100. Prices do vary a lot and you could end up paying much more.

When choosing a new hearing aid, pay close attention to the warrantee. Shop around for a dealer who gives good, extended cover for repairs. The period of time will vary from one manufacturer to another. However, they all cover repairs needed as a result of defective parts or bad workmanship. In any cases the minimum you should expect is twelve months. Initially, there will be routine check ups and general maintenance. Make sure this is covered by the supplier. Most Insurance companies do not cover hearing aids. There are some who do if you pay a higher premium. It is a good idea to contact your broker to find one that will cover maintenance and repair. Remember the golden rule, keep your hearing aid clean and dry. It could save you a lot of money.

It is not hard to understand that hearing aids do work to improve your life. If you cannot hear sufficiently then your life will be impaired. Communication through sound is very important. Of course it is possible to communicate by many other means such as emails and writing. But sound is immediate and not being able to take advantage of this sense will slow down our personal lives and our work lives. If you experience loss of hearing and you are running a business you must seek out an audiologist as soon as possible. You can also approach your doctor first and he or she will direct you to an audiologist.

How Do Hearing Aids Work With Sound?

How can a little device like a hearing aid, simply popped into you ear, produce sound? Loss of hearing really does affect your life. With the help of electronics you can improve your hearing. This is the way to get your life back to as normal as possible. There are many different models available. The basic principle of how they function is the same. They pick up sound and amplify it so you can hear. All hearing aids have a microphone, a receiver, electronics, and a battery to power it. The more modern devices allow more personalized settings.

Analogue aids simply make the sounds it picks up louder. Loudness is controlled by the wearer. Programmable analogue aids have more options than the basic analogue model. These can be preset by an audiologist. It will be done according to what you want. For example, you may want a setting for the cinema, or both quiet and noisy backgrounds. You can change these by a switch located on the device. Digital hearing aids use a more advanced technology that analyzes sounds first. It is then adjusted to the preferences of the wearer. They are more pricy than the analogue devices. With analogue, programmable analogue and digital units, they all send the sounds to a receiver. This is found inside the inner ear.

BTE’s are located behind the ear. A unit is placed behind the ear and impels the sounds to an ear mold inside the ear. The two are connected by a discreet tube. In the Ear – ITE’s do not have a unit outside the ear. They are smaller and fit entirely inside the inner ear. Although they are more fragile, they have more choices available. Like a Telecoil, this enables the unit to be used with a telephone. In the Canal aids – ITC and Completely in The Canal – CIC’s are worn inside the ear canal itself. These are the tiniest and can be precisely set to the person’s needs. A ‘Bone Conduction’ hearing aid is surgically implanted and works differently to the others. This is for those suffering severe hearing loss, and when the ear canal is blocked or damaged irreparably.

The ‘Bone Conduction’ aid picks up sounds via a microphone. It does not send the signal to a receiver inside the ear. It passes the sounds to an ‘oscillator’ that sits next to the skull, connected to the auditory nerve. These vibrations are understood by the brain as sounds. This type of hearing aid is only used as a last resort. They are only given to those who have no other choice. Consult your audiologist if you think you need a hearing aid. They will be able to advise you on which model suits your particular needs.

The top manufacturers have researchers and designers constantly improving the waterproof hearing aids. They want to provide a unit that cannot be infiltrated by water. Until this happens, you can purchase a ‘water resistant’ unit. You must take good care of this kind of hearing aid and be careful not to let moisture build up on the inner part. This will damage the electronics and be an unnecessary cost to bear. Make certain that you always have a soft tissue or cloth available to give your device a good wipe. Waterproof hearing aids will not be specified because they do not exist as yet.

Waterproof Hearing Aids An Extra Precaution

The two main causes why hearing aids need repair can easily be avoided. The main two are moisture in the electronics as well as a build up of earwax. Both these causes are also bad for the ear. It is essential that your device is wiped over with a soft cloth or tissue. This will keep the device dry and clean. There are tools for the removal of earwax. The build up of moisture in the hearing device is a serious problem. The cause of this is humidity inside the ear. Products are available to keep the ear dry. ‘Waterproof’ units are on the market. It is important to know that the term ‘waterproof’ is not accurate. There is no hearing aid that is one hundred percent waterproof. It would be clearer to say water resistant. The reason is because sound must depart from the unit somewhere. The manufacturers are doing there best to improve resistance against humidity and water. This is a widespread reason for repair.

There are certain manufacturers that do make their hearing aids water resistant. The world’s most trusted name is Rion. This manufacturer is based in Japan. They have made it their business to concentrate on the water resistant aspect of hearing aids. The HB54 is a Behind the Ear unit that has a covering layer around the electronics. This provides protection against moisture. This certainly will not allow you to go for a swim wearing the hearing aid. It is indeed technology at its highest form but it is not fully waterproofed. These units are especially useful to those who enjoy sports. This particular brand name will stop perspiration entering the delicate electronics. The Lotus PP is also a popular model, manufactured by Eurion. It is the other trusted name in water resistant hearing aids. This hearing aid can be bought online. If you are thinking of purchasing a ’waterproof aid’, it is important you understand their limitations.

You can buy products that have been formulated to keep the ear canal dry. One such product is called ‘Dri-Aid’. It is available as a spray. You can also use ‘Super Seals’ – a wrapping to protect the unit. You can use everyday films to cover your hearing aid. Make sure you do not put so much on that you stop the water going in but also stop the sound coming out. Carry a waterproof bag with you. If you enter an environment where water can make its way into the unit, just tuck it away. An example is an amusement park. A simple task like this can allow you to have a good time on whatever rides you fancy. The least susceptible unit for water, apart from cochlear implants, is the ‘Completely In the Canal’ – CIC hearing aid.
