If you have to rely on a hearing aid then it makes sense to know all about hearing aid manufacturers. There are manufacturers that dominate the industry because their products are good. The well known brand names manufacture products that have been tried and tested over time. You will find that these are the names that surface time and again when looking for a hearing aid. Because this is a highly specialized field of manufacturing that requires the highest level of quality control you must know who made your hearing aid and where you can go if you have a problem with it.

Data On Hearing Aid Manufacturers

With so many different models and manufacturers it can be difficult to decide which hearing aid is best for you. They certainly are not cheap, so you need to make sure you choose what is best for you. The most sensible way is to speak to your audiologist before you buy. They can help you make the most appropriate decision.

The top manufacturer in Japan is ‘Rion’. They specialize in ‘waterproof models,’ although it should be noted, they are not fully waterproofed. They do use state of the art technology. This makes them extremely water resistant. It does ensure their hearing aids are the best for wet conditions. They produce lots of other different designs and styles including the surgically implanted ‘bone conduction hearing aid’. This product sends sound waves to the skull, and then into the inner ear.

Widex has been producing hearing aids for half a century. They are a Danish company who produce the Behind the Ear, In the Ear and Completely in the Canal versions. The
Axent, Cetera, Aries and Gemini are the most favored models. The ‘Senso Diva Series’ uses a special function which takes out background noise and is the most renowned of their products. The company designed the ‘Diva Music Program’, allowing people to continue listening to their favorite music even when they are suffering from hearing loss.

If good customer service is important to you, ‘Starkey’ might be the right choice for you. They produce a wide range of hearing aids all supplied with good warranties. This innovative company has a program whereby they take in used aids, repair them and resell at very competitive prices.

The largest producer of aids in theUnited States is Siemens. The Prisma 2, Music Pro and Phoenix Pro series’ are best known. Siemens has usually been the first with new ideas for the last 125years.

Belltone produces the very popular and are under the Oria series. There is a ‘Speech Detection System’ that is auto adjusts to the noises in the environment. It also uses ‘Dual Microphone Technology’. The Opera, D71, Invisa and P77 models are also in demand. Belltone recently merged with GN Resound.

‘Conversa‘, ‘Liaison’ and ‘Unison’ are the most sought after models manufactured by Unitron Hearing Aids. The ‘Liaison’ ‘feedback reduction’ properties are particularly good. The ‘Conversa’ was created for using the telephone. ‘Unitron’ uses the most up to date ‘Multi Channel Technology’.

Fifteen percent of the US market belongs to Phonak. A large Swedish based manufacturer who produce a huge selection of hearing aids The Perseo, Amio, Maxx, Ario, Aero to name a few. Their hearing aids have sensors to auto adjust sound relative to environment. They also give a remote control option.

If you have been experiencing hearing problems then do not hesitate to consult with an audiologist. Many of us who have been in a similar situation remember how concerned we were about wearing a hearing aid. None of us wanted to use a device that would be noticed by all and sundry. You will be pleased to know that behind the ear hearing aids are very small and are not in your face aid. As you can tell from the name they fit behind the ear. They are also very small and if they are in a flesh color they are simply not noticed. You will not feel self conscious if you use this model.

Why Behind The Ear Hearing Aids Are So Popular

BTE’s – Behind The Ear Hearing Aids are certainly favored by those who are hard of hearing. They are named as such because that’s exactly where they are worn. A small plastic unit, which houses the necessary technology to pick up the sound, is placed behind the ear. A tiny ear mould is also placed inside the ear; it receives the sound, from the unit, through a discreet tube. Behind the Ear Hearing Aids are appropriate for any type of hearing loss. Whether your condition is mild or acute, child or adult, there is a BTE suitable for you.

A BTE is quite large, so why is it so popular? Its size reflects its capacity. Because it is bigger, it can house a more powerful battery, and, also, a potent electronic device that substantially increases the strength of the electrical signals. Also, the BTE is very economical, especially compared to many other models. Because of this, it is thought to be extremely good value for money, a powerful hearing device at a reasonable cost. Not only are the affordable, people find them comfortable. The unit sits behind the ear in a natural way, and, in time, becomes indistinct to the wearer. If you decide to have a BTE, your Audiologist will make a cast of your ear and from this will make the inner ear mould. This ensures a perfect fit! Because the ear mould is made to fit the ear, the BTE can be very suitable for children. As they grow, new moulds are made. You do not have to replace the hearing aid as the child grows and this makes it more cost effective.

One downside of the BTE is its size. Although they are comfortable, the Behind the Ear Hearing Unit is quite large; therefore some people are conscious of how noticeable it is to others. This is why they may opt for the Completely in the ear Hearing Aid, a CIC. It is smaller and a lot less noticeable. But it does come with a higher price tag. Most BTE models are available in a variety of colors and shapes. This means the unit should complement you hair and skin tone, helping the unit appear more discreet. Another problem some people experience with the BTE, although one that can be resolved, is high pitched whistling or feedback. Because the unit is outside the ear, it may pick up excess noise. This is not a problem with design. All it needs is for your audiologist to change the settings to correct this. You will learn how to do this for yourself.

Both Analogue and Digital BTE’s are available, including the conventional analogue and the programmable analogue versions. The Digital Behind the Ear hearing aid is popular. You would have to pay more for it. The only person who can be of the proper assistance to you is an audiologist. You must get professional advice when making a choice.

Without a doubt, the best hearing aids are the kinds that are right for the individual. You may not need to use the most expensive top of the range hearing aids. It would not make sense to have to pay for a device that had features that you would never make use of. If you need a hearing aid that is more basic then this is the best kind for you. On the other hand, if you do require a more state of the art hearing aid with many features then pay the price and get it. You will only be comfortable when you use the hearing device that is best for your own personal needs.

The Best Hearing Aids Are An Individual Choice

You may think that buying the ‘best’ hearing aid available, and probably the most expensive, ensures you are getting the ‘best’ one for you. It appears to be the right principle. So, what is wrong with the idea? What is ‘best’ for you may not necessarily be the most advanced or the most expensive. What is generally ‘best’, is to buy the hearing aid that most suits what you need and this depends on the kind of hearing loss you are suffering. Different types of hearing loss require different types of hearing aid. Some being more suitable for certain conditions than others. Here is some information on the different conditions and aid available. It may help you choose which one is really the ‘best’ for you.

Conductive Hearing Loss is one of the most common conditions. It is when the sound cannot travel from the outer ear to the inner ear. There are various reasons why this occurs. Sensorineural Hearing Loss is more serious than Conductive hearing Loss but it can be helped by a hearing aid. Problems with the nerves could be the cause. The signal from the inner ear cannot be passed to the brain. Mixed Hearing Loss is when someone is suffering from a combination of both these conditions.

The aids we are most familiar with are the BTE, a Behind the Ear and the ITE, an In The Ear. They amplify sounds and are suitable for most kinds of hearing loss. Analogue and Digital aids are available, the Analogue being the cheaper option. Today, the Digital is becoming more popular because of its superior sound quality and extra add-on features. More people are opting for extra features, dual microphone systems & channel selection, which allows the user to switch from one setting to another, depending on their environment.

Also available is the telecoil, this allows the hearing aid to be used with a telephone. Hearing Aids are available that can be surgically implanted, the whole unit or in part. They are designed for those with serious or chronic hearing loss and have their advantages, and disadvantages. It will not work if the middle ear is damaged and is designed for those suffering sensorineural hearing loss. If you think this option might be right for you, you should talk to a doctor.

The most recent design of hearing aid relies on a different kind of science. Earglasses sit behind the ear and do not incorporate any electronics at all, therefore, do not need a power supply. They work through the principals of Acoustics and can magnify sound up to twelve decibels. It amplifies sound in a similar kind of principle to when you cup your hand around your ear! It is not for those with serious hearing loss.

Remember that reputable suppliers of hearing aids offer a thirty or sixty day trial. This is a good idea because it gives you time to try the unit and make sure it really is the ’best’ for you.

It is really important to compare hearing aids before you actually buy. It is not only because you want to find the best deal but also because you want to know exactly what you are getting. Hearing aids fall into the category of high technology. They really are the most amazing little devices that do an enormous amount of good because they improve the quality of life for those who have loss of hearing. The technology that runs these devices is constantly being upgraded and improved. This means that there are models that are more advanced than others. The only way to keep up is to compare hearing aids.
Compare Hearing Aids Before Selecting

If you have been diagnosed as hard of hearing, you will be in the marketplace to buy a hearing aid. Have a chat with your audiologist. Ask for recommendations. Professionals will help you choose what is right for you. Hearing aids do not come cheap. You must shop around. There are lots of different models available and this can feel like a minefield. Price wise, analogue aids are cheaper than digital devices. Why is that? Basically speaking, digital aids have a microchip that can analyze and adjust sound. Analogue aids simply turn up the sound. Digital aids can be personalized and there are more features to use. There is a programmable analogue aid available. But it is not as flexible as the digital.

This advanced technology makes the digital aid more costly. The analogue models are becoming less and less popular and some dealers do not sell them because of this. Many hearing aids are categorized by where they are placed. The smallest available is the CIC – Completely in the Canal, placed deep inside the ear canal. Because of its size, the features are limited and its life span is short. It is the most expensive model available and only suitable for those with moderate loss of hearing. Similar to the CIC is the ITC – In the Canal, placed just inside the ear canal. They have more features available and are less expensive than the CIC. The ITE – is placed in the ear bowl. They are the largest of the three and suitable for mild or severe hearing loss.

The disadvantage of the ITE is they can produce feedback and are sensitive to wind noise. A lot depends on the quality of the model and correct placement in the ear. It can be resolved by adjusting the settings. It is best to discuss the problem with your audiologist. They are larger than the other two and have more available features. This is an advantage because they are more adaptable to your needs.

The most common type of unit is the BTE – Behind The Ear. A unit is placed behind the ear and an ear mould is placed in the ear canal. The two are connected by a discreet tube. They are the most adaptable and the most powerful of all the units and are suitable for both adults and children. The disadvantage is, they are large and people find them a bit conspicuous. Some companies offer smaller models than others.

Add-On Features can be very important to some and there are several available. Adjustable settings allow you to swap between one preset and another. For example, a preset could be very useful when entering a noisy environment. Directional microphones can pick up sounds coming from ahead and reduce background noise. These settings can be switch or remote operated. Telecoils allow the hearing aid to be used with a telephone. It must be compatible and normally eliminates cordless and cell phones.

You must get the right information and advice on digital hearing aids and frequency response before you go ahead and buy. It is a good idea to read up on this particular device and how it works. A very good place for doing this is online. But there can be no substitute for talking directly to an audiologist. This is because you will be properly assessed and told whether or not digital hearing aids and frequency response is suitable for your needs. If you want the best sound for the best quality of life you must make every effort to get professional assistance.

Digital Hearing Aids and Frequency Response Your Choice

What is the different between a digital hearing aid and analogue aid? Analogue devices make use of a microphone. It picks up sound from outside the ear. Before the sound is sent to a receiver in the ear it is improved. Simply put, the analogue hearing aid ‘turns the volume up’. The digital hearing aid is a more recent and complex technology. A microchip examines sounds that are picked up on the outside of the ear. It evaluates sound and then sends it on to the receiver inside the ear. This is progressive technology and has greater options. Settings are personalized to suit the user.

What consumers want to know is whether the digital aid is the better device. Sound enters the digital and analogue hearing aids the same way. The sound waves do not change when the unit sends them to the receiver. The real advantages of the digital aid over the analogue model are brought about by the way it processes signals.

The analogue hearing aid does have disadvantages. It only has two choices for the user and they are volume up or volume down. If you find yourself in a noisy environment you can turn the noise down. But this means that all sounds are turned down even the ones you do want to be aware of. This may not be what you want or need. Programmable hearing aids are accessible. You can change the settings according to the environment. But they are still limited when compared to the options of the digital device.

The microchip in the digital aid can reduce noise by finding unwanted frequencies in order to eliminate them. This is a very definite improvement on the analogue aid. The digital and the programmable analogue aid use ‘directional microphones’. But the combination of the microchip and the DSP (digital sound processing) is what make it a better aid. The DSP detects relevant frequency levels and allows the microphones to decide on the correct capacity for sound signals. Therefore, microphones work a lot better and exclusively for the user. The microchip also allows more settings to be used if the user requires it. Your audiologist can decide on the frequencies to be eliminated and which should remain.

Digital hearing aids can make their own sounds. Analogue aids cannot do this. Once again it is your audiologist who is the best person to adjust the device. This way you will be sure the adjustments are exactly what you need. Due to this the digital hearing aid gives a precise account of sounds and also improves on the quality. As always, you must see your audiologist before any decision is made. Analogue aids are being used less and less. But the analogue aids are still a lot cheaper than digital aids.

For some of us having a cell phone is very annoying. But for most of us a cell phone is very convenient. Most people who use a hearing aid have been denied the benefit of a cell phone. Thankfully, technology continues to elevate and now there is a hearing aid compatible Bluetooth headset. This means that if you use a hearing aid and have done without a cell phone you can now have one. As long as your hearing is compatible you there is nothing to stop you from having a chat any time of the day or night on your cell phone.

Hearing Aid Compatible Bluetooth Headset Use Radio Waves

Today, cell phones are a part of everyday life and a necessity for early all. For those of us with a hearing aid using a cell may have been impossible. Because cell phones use radio waves they are not compatible with hearing aids. If you try to use one, wearing an aid, the unit produces feedback that makes it impossible to carry out a conversation. If you do not suffer from serious hearing loss, you may get by. Simply remove the unit when you want to use a cell phone. If you suffer from severe hearing loss, this is not an option. Manufacturers are always looking for new ways to make hearing aids more compatible with other technology.

You may have heard of ‘Bluetooth‘. The manufacturers have taken advantage of this new technology and designed a system whereby those suffering from hearing loss can use this system with a hearing aid. It allows them to talk on a cellular phone or PDA. What is ‘Bluetooth’? Is it the name of a company? ‘Bluetooth’ is the name given to a wireless system used by various companies. The manufacturers, ’Starkey’, have designed a device called an ‘Ear Level Instrument’ – ELI. It is for use with ‘Bluetooth’ and is in demand. It works with PDA’s and cell phones. The device has a rechargeable battery, is small and does not weigh much at all. It is simple and easy to hook up. Because the ELI is digital, there is virtually no interference and the reception is good. There are drawbacks. They are hard to get hold of and everything has to be ‘Bluetooth’ compatible.

The ELI is worn behind the ear. You also need a ‘Telecoil’; this sends the sounds to the hearing aid. It is the ELI that examines. The battery wears down rather fast. Because they are rechargeable it does keep costs down. The manufacturers are trying to resolve this. To see if your cell phone is ‘Bluetooth’ compatible, look for the logo. It should be on the box. Another place to look is under ’specifications’. It should also have other useful information in the manual. If you want to use an ELI it is very important that your cell phone is ‘Bluetooth’ compatible. Make sure you check it out before you order one.

‘Bluetooth’ has been used for several years with Pac’s, Cell phones and PDA’s. It has a radius of around ten meters and allows devices that have it to exchange information. Lots of people believe this technology will be used more and more in the future. The ELI device is very new. But if ‘Bluetooth’ does become more and more widely used the sets should become widely available. In turn, this will also bring prices down.

There are certain extras that are needed if you are the user of a hearing aid. Hearing aid supplies are available online and through your audiologist. You are going to need the right equipment in order to keep your device as clean as possible. It will take up less time and there will be much less chance of you damaging your hearing aid by using the wrong tools. You must also make certain that you have a supply of batteries. It does make life a lot easier if you have all the necessary supplies where you are. Like the hearing aid these supplies do not take up much space and are easily stored at home or work.

Hearing Aid Supplies At Home

You have spent your earnings on that essential hearing aid. Life is back to normal again. But what do you need to keep it that way? There are just a few more things you need to know about hearing aid supplies. Most of the items you need can be found at your local drugstore and many of them online. If you do struggle to find an outlet, then approach your audiologist. A professional will have the contacts to send you in the right direction.

Hearing aids need a battery. You must change it regularly. A pair of tweezers will definitely be needed. Very few have a hand that is small enough and completely steady. Eveready, Energizer, Rayovac, to name a few, produce hearing aid batteries. Check the date to make sure they have not been on the shelf too long. Shelf life is around three years. Cleaning is also an important factor. This is necessary to keep your device in good conditions. It will minimize costly maintenance work.

For regular cleaning you need several tools. A Wax pick is a useful accessory. It works along the same principles as a tooth pick. It is very efficient at removing unwanted earwax from the unit especially in vulnerable areas such as the receiver. There are kits available with a selection of brushes, picks, and other handy items that could make life less complicated. The parts of the hearing aid housing the electronics are very sensitive to water. Never ever wash them. Clean with a tissue or soft cloth. Audiowipes are good as they are designed for cleaning electronic equipment.

Another important factor, relative to the good upkeep of your aid, is your ears. Keep them clean. Earwax can cause the unit to malfunction. The humidity inside the ear is bad for hearing devices. Good old fashioned ear buds are good. A product called ‘Mini Dry’ reduces moisture inside the ear. There is also a sanitized spray to stop the accumulation of wax. Your ears may feel irritated due to close contact with the unit. Soothing creams are available.

Now and again your hearing aid will need repair. If it malfunctions, check the battery. There are proper testers available to check batteries. You do not want to replace the battery when it is not the problem. A cheap and cheerful repair kit can also be handy. These are adequate for minor and common repairs. If it is more serious, take it to your audiologist or return it to the supplier. Feedback or a whistling noise can be a problem. This may not be more complicated to fix than turning the volume down. Give it a try before going to an expert.

The prices of hearing aids can be a real turn off. There is no denying that money is needed in order to afford what we want and need. There are times when what we need is expensive. If you are one of the many people who must have a hearing aid the price must be considered but it cannot stop you from getting a hearing aid. The quality of your life is at stake if you do not get a hearing device. There are hearing aids that are cheaper and those that are more expensive. For those who are having financial difficulties there are organizations that provide serviced used hearing aids that practically as good as new. Most important they are affordable.

Are Prices Of Hearing Aids Too Costly?

Hearing aids do cost a lot. You may be quite aghast at just how expensive they are. Some suppliers give better deals than others. You must shop around. Several factors contribute to this. But no matter which way you look at it, they are not ‘going for a song’. Research was done in 2004 and the average cost is $1800. This can be misleading simply because it is an average. Hearing aids are on offer from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars. There are many different styles and features on hand. Which one you need can dramatically change cost. As a general rule the smaller they are the larger the asking price.

Analogue hearing aids are cheaper but they are becoming outdated. Most of the new models are digital. The good news is they have an improved quality of sound. There are more properties available. The bad news is they are not as cheap as the earlier analogue models. Analogues are less expensive to make. Digital hearing aids can include personalized settings; they are more efficient and smaller. These come with ‘Dual Microphones’, Telecoils and ‘EQ Systems’. Naturally, the most advanced technology does cost more money. Some of these properties are not optional. This can be a tough call when you need special features in order to hear. If you do not need special functions you could end up paying for something you do not make full use of. Price prevents people getting a hearing aid in the first place and stops those who should upgrade from doing so.

If you shop around you might very well save yourself some cash. The manufacturers are becoming more and more competitive so there are often good deals being offered. Some companies have the power to buy in bulk and can pass on huge savings to their customers. That means you. There are more and more people who need to use hearing aids. By sheer demand the prices are falling. Like most products, the size of the market tends to dictate the value of the products. Taking the time to search the market place is definitely a good idea. Especially when having to buy an essential yet expensive item. Although everybody understands that a person is often limited by finances, an item may be cheap but prove to be expensive in the long run. If you buy a hearing aid that does not meet your needs, it could end up being a complete waste of money. Try to balance the positives and the negatives. Your needs should outweigh the cost. Needing to hear as clearly as possibly is indeed worth the investment in yourself.
